Surface Grinding

Close-tolerance surface grinding for precision parts, tooling, fixtures, dies, plates, and machine components requiring accurate dimensions and controlled surface finishes.

Precision Surface Grinding for Close-Tolerance Components

Surface grinding is used when a component requires precise dimensional control and carefully finished flat surfaces. BK Grinding provides precision surface grinding for parts where small amounts of material must be removed accurately to achieve the thickness, flatness, parallelism, or surface finish defined by the drawing or application.

Compared with processes focused primarily on rapid stock removal, surface grinding allows highly controlled finishing. It is well suited to tooling, machine components, plates, dies, fixtures, and precision parts that must interface accurately with other components.

Controlled Material Removal

Precision grinding often comes down to controlling very small changes in a part. A component may already be close to its finished dimensions but still require additional material removal to reach the specified thickness or improve the geometry of a critical surface.

BK Grinding approaches each surface grinding project according to the component's material, geometry, incoming condition, tolerances, and desired finish. Grinding parameters—including wheel selection, feed, speed, coolant, workholding, and the amount of material removed—are adapted to the application.

Flatness and Parallelism

Surface grinding can play an important role in producing parts that are flat and parallel. Flatness controls the condition of an individual surface, while parallelism controls the relationship between opposing surfaces. Both can directly affect how a component aligns, assembles, seals, or performs in subsequent machining and manufacturing operations.

When a part requires opposing surfaces to remain parallel while reaching a specific final thickness, material must be removed in a deliberate and controlled sequence. BK Grinding focuses on the finished requirements of the component rather than simply creating a visually smooth surface.

Surface Finish for Functional Components

Surface finish can influence the way a component contacts, moves against, seals with, or fits another part. For applications that specify a particular finish, the grinding process must account for more than dimensional measurements alone.

BK Grinding works to produce the surface condition required by the customer's drawing or application. The exact approach depends on the material and the functional requirements of the finished component.

Materials We Surface Grind

BK Grinding works with a broad range of materials, including steel, tool steel, stainless steel, aluminum, titanium, Inconel and specialty alloys. Capabilities also extend to certain plastics, carbon materials, and carbon-fiber composites when the application is appropriate.

Different materials respond differently to grinding. For that reason, the process is adjusted around the characteristics of the material rather than relying on a single standard setup.

Precision Grinding Built Around Your Specifications

Whether the requirement is a tooling component, fixture, die, machine part, precision plate, or another specialized component, BK Grinding's objective is straightforward: remove the necessary material while controlling the dimensions and surfaces that matter.

Customers can provide drawings, material information, target dimensions, flatness and parallelism requirements, and desired surface finish. BK Grinding can then evaluate the application and determine the appropriate precision surface grinding approach for the project.
